venus williams:On the first day of competition at the 2011 Australian Open, Venus Williams, the seven-time Grand Slam champion, defeated Italy’s Sara Errani 6-3, 6-2. But media and fans weren’t just focused on her strong backhand or 100-plus mile-per-hour serves. Her self-designed, aqua blue mini-dress was also drawing attention.
“It really was an ‘Illusion’ dress, the illusion when I wear the nude shorts under,” Williams explained after the match, according to AustralianOpen.com. “But at the last minute I decided not to. I just decided to wear the black ones. It’s just about focusing on the dress and not anything else. I mean, I had black shorts under. But normally, like, it’s all about the dress because it has a mesh and a satin kind of material.”
Although Williams opted out of the nude shorts, the blue and silver dress featured alternating mesh and satin stripes, with a zipper running the length of the garment.
The 160-pound, 6’1” Williams launched EleVen, her clothing line, in 2007. Its manifesto, which can be found on her website, includes this guidance: “Be yourself. Feel fabulous. Be fearless. Feel confident. Be casual. Feel sexy.” The champion also has an interior design company, V*Starr, which she founded in 2002.
It is only day two of the 15-day event, but Williams is already promising more skin in her outfits. She’s not breaking any rules, as the Australian Open does not have a formal dress code for competitors.
