geraldine hoff doyle:Geraldine Hoff Doyle, the Lansing, Michigan, woman known as “Rosie the Riveter” on an iconic World War II poster, died at the age of 86, the Lansing State Journal reported, citing her family.
The image of Doyle, first photographed by United Press International when she was 17 at a metal-pressing plant near Ann Arbor, was subsequently used by the U.S. government to encourage women to join the workforce to support the war effort, the newspaper said.
More than six million women went to work during the war, almost half of them in factories that helped produce aircraft, guns, tanks and ammunition, the Journal said.
