Baby doc:had been on the island less than 24 hours when word reached me that the Tontons Macoutes, the Duvaliers’ brutal private militia, had claimed another victim.
The body lay in clearing. Blood stained his white singlet. his killers could not be bothered to remove the man’s gold necklace.
Locals were indifferent and scurried about their normal business, after all murder was an everyday occurrence.
The corpse was of more interest to the gaggle of international hacks who had descended on Haiti.
From what we could gather, his offence was to be seen as a “community leader” – whatever that meant – and that was sufficient to sign his death warrant.
